Lawmakers and Policy Experts Press for Healthcare Transparency at House Energy and Commerce Hearing

This week, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health convened a hearing on lowering healthcare costs for all Americans, and the message was consistent: the status quo isn't working.
Chairman Brett Guthrie (R-KY) highlighted how rebates designed to benefit patients are instead being routed to group purchasing organizations, leaving consumers no better off. The fix, he pointed out, starts with transparency.
Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) took direct aim at vertical integration, calling out the unchecked consolidation allowing major corporations to buy up the healthcare supply chain, enrich themselves with taxpayer money, and leave patients and independent providers behind.
Sophia Tripoli, MPH from Families USA underscored the scale of the problem, describing the current consolidation landscape as a "giant black box" where smaller transactions fly under the radar of federal antitrust oversight entirely.
Taken together, the testimony painted a clear picture: without greater transparency and stronger oversight, the middlemen driving up healthcare costs will continue to consolidate power and evade accountability.
